Job Description

TITLE: HEALTHCARE NAVIGATOR/ORGANIZER

The Philadelphia Unemployment Project has a long history of advocating for access to health care for the uninsured. We are currently hiring for a Health Care Navigator/Organizer to assist uninsured people to access health care and to organize for city, state and federal policies that will guarantee that people can get the medical care that they need.

GENERAL DUTIES

Staff Health Rights Hotline. Answer questions for callers on full range of issues regarding health care access. Provide information, referral and advocacy regarding options for health care.

Become familiar with guidelines and procedures for Medicaid, low cost health insurance, hospital charity care, public health centers, prescription drug plans, and other programs of importance to the uninsured. Work with individuals to ensure that they receive needed medical care, including advocating on individuals’ behalf to Hospitals, Public Assistance and others.

Produce simple materials for educational purpose explaining how to access health care. Take initiative and show creativity in distributing these materials and promoting the use of the Benefits Rights Hotline.

Work with the Philadelphia Unemployment Project (PUP) Health Committee and Pennsylvania Health Access Network to involve uninsured and concerned persons and organizations in efforts to advocate for policies leading to increased access to health care. Show creativity and initiative in find new ways to involve people in the issue and empower their activity. Complete written reports for funders.

Work to involve the uninsured in organizing efforts. Educate them on current policy issues and help them develop the ability to speak and strategize on health care reform issues. Work with the Community Organizer to expand the base of P.U.P. members and cultivate leadership among the existing base, including organizing them around other issues as assigned.

Reach out to organizations to involve them in coalition efforts designed to win state and federal health care reform. Follow legislative initiatives and keep organizations and activists informed on developments.

Qualifications: Committed to economic justice. Good written and people skills. At least one year experience in social service delivery is required. Experience in community organizing would be ideal but not necessary. BA preferred but not required.
