The services of the Institute for Recovery and Community Integration are designed to help educate stakeholders, train practitioners and peers, and assist agencies in implementing recovery, peer support, and community integration models in the behavioral health services that they provide.

The 1999 Surgeon General’s Report and the recent President’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health (2003) call for what consumers of mental health services and research have been declaring for years – recovery is possible, recovery is the goal.

Specifically, the Surgeon General’s Report recommends that all mental health systems adopt a recovery focus or a recovery orientation and the New Freedom Commission recommends that consumers be fully involved in orienting the system toward recovery. Further, the mandate of the Olmstead decision (1999) brings people with psychiatric disability into the scope of disability rights and requires states to plan to eliminate segregation and barriers to full participation in community life.

Understanding the concept and process of recovery and community integration, how they interact with one another, how they have developed over the years, how the mental health system can be transformed, and the collaboration necessary are important for all stakeholder groups.  The Institute’s workshops on recovery and community integration are designed to help begin that process.

The Certified Peer Specialist Program 10 days

Teaches participating consumers specific skills relevant to providing peer support, creating a new standard for consumers providing peer support services in systems of care where credentialing requirements have traditionally excluded consumers from staff positions. As certified provider staff, peer specialists work to help other consumers with skill building, recovery/life goal setting, problem solving, establishing self-help groups, utilizing self-help recovery tools (e.g. WRAP), and serve as a model for personal recovery.
Note: The training is geared towards behavioral health systems and organizations looking to sponsor a group of 20 for certification and are interested in systems transformation to implement CPS services.  [more...]
